San Francisco artist James Jarrett creates sophisticated color-field paintings, with an unmistakable power and elegant style. Using a minimalist palette that ranges from deep primaries to white-on-white, Jarrett subtly explores the relationship between space and object. On the surface of his large canvases, multiple layers of colored glazes drip and wash against sensation of floating gently through a conceptual landscape. Jarrett ultimately seeks to create, in his own words, "a minimal filed of color representing the power of light with overlaid geometric forms representing spiritual elements."

ARTIST STATEMENT
I am fascinated with color and it is always my aim to extract the essence of a color and isolate the color for the sake of experience and for me - celebration. To begin a painting I need to have inspiration. I like to take an object, still life, or imagery from a photo and superimpose a small section, as if looking at it through a magnifying glass. Essentially I isolate a section of "color" and project it onto canvas which creates a sense of expansiveness and space. At times I will also contrast isolated color, or "space" with texture or geometric forms to explore the relationship between space and object. I am also fascinated with process and the relationship between controlling process and allowing process to take place naturally.
